LabVIEW is able to interface to many hardware items for control and monitoring.

In order to program your myRIO device the minimum software that needs to be installed is: NI LabVIEW Development System; NI LabVIEW Real-Time Module; NI LabVIEW myRIO Toolkit; The corresponding myRIO Toolkit will bring the needed drivers to recognize and program the device and thus you don’t need to install the RIO drivers.
LabVIEW is able to control devices and also receive responses from them. To achieve this, an interface is required enabling LabVIEW to connect to the device or instrument. These interfaces are called LabVIEW drivers and there is an extensive library of these drivers that are available within the LabVIEW ecosystem. Instrument drivers: the basics. The LabVIEW driver takes the commands from LabVIEW and then converts them into the instructions required for that device, sending them over the relevant interface whether it be USB, serial, Wi-Fi, Ethernet, GPIB or any other interface applicable for that device. LabVIEW drivers are developed for a host of differnet instruments. Driver Version Naming Changes Driver versions are now aligned with the versions of major NI application software products. This alignment gives you information about the year the driver was released and the most recent software version with which the driver was designed to work. Driver versions now start with a two-digit year indicator:. For example, NI-DAQmx 14.0.0 is the version released with LabVIEW 2014.

Instrument drivers: the basics
An instrument driver provides the interface between the core LabVIEW software and the instrument or device that it needs to control or receive data from.
The LabVIEW instrument driver is essentially a set of software routines that enable data to be sent to an instrument or device and data received from it.
Within the overall driver there are individual sub-routines that enable various tasks to be performed. These include: configuring the device, reading from, writing to, and triggering the device or instrument. Instrument drivers simplify instrument control and reduce LabVIEW program development time by eliminating the need to learn the programming protocol for each instrument.

Some are developed by National Instruments, the company that develops and owns LabVIEW, but other drivers may be developed by third parties – possibly the manufacturers of the devices. Some LabVIEW drivers may incorporate all the remote controls applicable to the device and over a variety of interfaces applicable to the device. Others may have a limited set of instructions or capabilities. Additionally many are available free of charge, but for others there may be costs associated with them. It depends upon the devices, the manufacturers and the developers of the code. However most of them are available within the LabVIEW ecosystem without additional charge. Overall LabVIEW provides extensive support for interfacing to devices using LabVIEW drivers. These instrument drivers may be written in a variety of ways: LabVIEW, LabWindows/CVI and they use either Virtual Instrumentation Software Architecture, VISA, or the Interchangeable Virtual Instrument, IVI, protocol.
LabVIEW driver availability
National Instruments makes thousands of device drivers available for download on the NI Instrument Driver Network, IDNet or directly from within LabVIEW.
Additionally many equipment manufacturers may also make drivers available via portals on their own sites. With many companies and organizations using LabVIEW, it pays these device and instrument manufacturers to make LabVIEW drivers available to increase the competitiveness of their products.
Using a LabVIEW Instrument Driver
Within LabVIEW and instrument driver is made up from a set of VIs, or Virtual Instruments. Each VI corresponds to a particular operation like configuring, reading, writing or triggering an instrument or device. By using this approach the programming of instruments or devices is considerably simplified as it overcomes the issue of programming in a low level language.
There are two main ways of finding and downloading pre-prepared LabVIEW drivers from within the NI LabVIEW ecosystem:
Labview Drivers Download
- NI Instrument Driver Finder: This method can be used on LabVIEW 8.0 or later. Select Tools » Instrumentation » Find Instrument Drivers to launch the Instrument Driver Finder. This tool searches IDNet to find the specified instrument driver.
- IDNet: For older versions of LabVIEW, prior to V 8.0 then it is necessary to directly search IDNet.
There is a huge variety of different LabVIEW instrument drivers providing the interface between LabVIEW and the peripheral hardware devices and instruments. These are a central element of the overall LabVIEW ecosystem and provide an easy method of controlling instruments and accessing data from them or from remote devices.

Installation
- Download the evaluation copy of LabVIEW from the National Instruments Academic Software website.
- Double click the downloader to begin the installation. (Please Note: The downloader application is very small, only 154 KB. The actual installation is much larger, >1.17 GBs depending on what toolkits you choose to install.)
- 'The self-extracting archive will create an installation image on your hard drive and launch the installation. After the installation completes, you may delete the installation image if you wish to be able to modify or repair the installation in the future.
- Click Unzip to extract the LabVIEW installer to the default location 'C:National Instruments DownloadsLabVIEW2014'
- The Microsoft .MET Framwork 4.0 is required before you can install this product. You may be asked to install the .NET Framwork 4.0 now.
- Accept the license terms and complete the .NEW Framework 4.0 installation if required.
- Exit all programs before running this Setup. Disabling virus scanning utilities may improve installation speed. This program is subject to the accompanying license agreements.
- Enter your Full Name, and MIT as your organization.
- At this point you may enter the Serial Number listed through the appropriate link on IS&T's LabVIEW page (Faculty & Staff or Student).
- (You may leave the Application Builder for LabVIEW 2014 field blank if activating MIT's Licesne of LabVIEW Professional.)
- (You may leave the Application Builder for LabVIEW 2014 field blank if activating MIT's Licesne of LabVIEW Professional.)
- Select the folder to install NI LabVIEW 2014.
- Select any additional features you might want to install.
- If you are installing LabVIEW on a version of Windows where the Windows Firewall is enabled. you may have to 'Unblock' so that you can use all of networking features in LabVIEW. (During this step you also have the option to opt-out of future LabVIEW update notifications.)
- Accept the following four license agreements.
- Start the installation.
- During the installation you may be prompted to Install Hardware Support for LabVIEW. You must install the appropriate device drivers in order to add support for you hardware in LabVIEW. Even if you installed device drivers with a previous version of LabVIEW, you must install them again with the current version of LabVIEW to ensure hardware support. Decline support is you plan on installing Hardware Support at a later date.
- LabVIEW 2014 installation should now be complete.
Activation
- Following the installation of LabVIEW 2014 you will be asked to activate.
- IS&T recommends you activate automatically through a secure internet connection.
- Enter the provided Serial Number for the LabVIEW 2014 Application Builder, and the Development System.
- A National Instruments User Profile is required to activate. If you do not have a National Instruments User Profile you can create one.
- Please note, almost all of the fields are required.
- Please wait while the Activation Wizard contacts National Instruments.
- After activation completes you may need to restart the associated products to use any new features.
